Bear in mind that the only reason we know about any of this is because a letter was leaked to a local MP. If it weren’t for that I dread to think how much more would have been going on behind closed doors.

Is this the Rob Larkman piece you’re referring to? It’s undated on the Whittington’s website: http://www.whittington.nhs.uk/default.asp?c=3297&t=1,182

From this it’s clear that the NHS strategy plan for the sector 2010-14 has already been published, with seven different possible configurations, only one of which includes maintenance of full Whit A&E service. Assuring that the ‘final list of options will then be subject to full and formal public consultation.” No mention when this might be, though it’s obvious the matter is already under discussion by the NHS. Sounds like the NHS will have gone 9/10ths of the way to making their decisions, and public consultation will be after ,instead of before, that !

Recent news that Whit staff are extremely worried about the future and some considering leaving shows how damaging it is to go so far with vague planning before public consultation

We are horrified at the proposal to do away with the 24-hour A&E facility at The Whittington Hospital and to reduce its function to that of a ‘local’ hospital. The Whittington has only very recently been extensively renovated at vast expense and it would be a disgrace to reduce its function in this way. The paucity of public transport to and almost total lack of parking facilities at the Royal Free would certainly put lives at risk if the A&E at The Whittington were to be closed.
